Travelling east en route to the city of Bratislava, via the Austrian village of Kittsee near the border, brings you to the first Slovak village of Jarovce nestled amongst pleasant countryside. This region is called "Apricot Land," because here the apricots grow like crazy. However, the local food is not only about this delicious fruit but also about lots of taste.
Jarovsky Dvor is a well known establishment among locals and visitors. It has built its reputation on its lovely country-style decor and, predominantly, its very tasty dishes. Famous Slovak sheep cheese dumplings with crunchy morcels of bacon will more than satisfy your appetite. If you are really hungry, you may go even wilder for the taste of baked goose with red cabbage and potato pancakes which will take you back to medieval times. Back then, people had no idea about cholesterol. They simply enjoyed what tasted good. You will not „cook your own goose“ here, I promise. Leave it to the chef. On a lighter note, you may choose Chicken Paprika, or just any variety of chicken dish. Take my advice and try a taste of the local fish – freshwater Bass just simply grilled with garlic and vegetables. Your palate will savour another great taste from the variety of dishes on offer.
As I have only mentioned typical Slovak food, do not be surprised when you see dishes from the International kitchen on the menu. Wiener Schnitzel or Italian pasta or pizza have become „as Slovak as it gets,“ so to speak.
Do not forget to enjoy „Slivovica,“ plum brandy’ or nowadays the so popular „Hruskovica,“ pear brandy, which is very strong, to aid your digestive system and set you up for a great day in the city.
